Austin, Stephen Fuller

Austin, Stephen Fuller Austin, Stephen Fuller, 1793â€"1836, American leader of colonization in Texas, known as the Father of Texas, b. Wythe co., Va.; son of Moses Austin. He grew up in Missouri, studied at Transylvania Univ. in Kentucky, served (1814â€"20) in the Missouri territorial legislature, and was studying law in New Orleans when his father died. Stephen took up the plans to colonize Texas and on a journey there (1821) selected the area between the Brazos and Colorado rivers. In Jan., 1822, he planted the first legal settlement of Anglo-Americans in Texas. He later went to Mexico City to have his grant cleared and confirmed by the newly independent Mexican government. Austin's settlements, with the towns of San Felipe de Austin and Brazoria, prospered. Other American colonists poured in. As friction developed over the years with the Mexican government, Austin opposed illegal efforts at Texan independence. He was sent in 1833 to Mexico City to present the settlers' grievances, to ask that Texas be separated from Coahuila, and to get the Mexican immigration law modified. He was accused of treason and imprisoned. On his return to Texas in 1835 he opposed the government of Santa Anna and so forwarded the Texas Revolution. He was sent as one of the commissioners (1835â€"36) of the provisional government to obtain aid in the United States, was defeated (1836) by Samuel Houston for the presidency of Texas, and served briefly until his death as secretary of state. Evolution of International Monetary System - 3692 Words

The Evolution of the International Monetary System In response to the worst financial crisis since the 1930s, policy-makers around the globe are providing unprecedented stimulus to support economic recovery and are pursuing a radical set of reforms to build a more resilient financial system. However, even this heavy agenda may not ensure strong, sustainable, and balanced growth over the medium term. We must also consider whether to reform the basic framework that underpins global commerce: the international monetary system. My purpose this evening is to help focus the current debate. While there were many causes of the crisis, its intensity and scope reflected unprecedented disequilibria. Large and unsustainable current account†¦show more content†¦This is because the only limit on reserve accumulation is its ultimate impact on domestic prices. Depending on the openness of the financial system and the degree of sterilization, this can be delayed for a very long time.2 In contrast, deficit countries must either deflate or run down reserves. Flexible exchange rates prevent many of these problems by providing less costly and more symmetric adjustment. Relative wages and prices can adjust quickly to shocks through nominal exchange rate movements in order to restore external balance. When the exchange rate floats and there is a liquid foreign exchange market, reserve holdings are seldom required.3 Most fundamentally, floating exchange rates overcome the seemingly innate tendency of countries to delay adjustment. A brief review of how the different international monetary regimes failed to manage this trade-off between nominal stability and timely adjustment provides important insights for current challenges. The Evolution of the International Monetary System The Gold Standard Under the classical gold standard, from 1870 to 1914, the international monetary system was largely decentralized and market-based. There was minimal institutional support, apart from the joint commitment of the major economies to maintain the gold price of their currencies. Although the adjustment to external imbalances should, in theory, have been relatively smooth, in practice it was not problem-free.4 Surplus countriesShow MoreRelatedThe Stystem Developed in the The Bretton Woods Conference862 Words   |  3 Pagesrepresentatives of two nations influenced the planning of the world monetary system (Scammell, 1982). Crime and Best Glorification Free Essays

The best glorification of crime and criminals seems to be portrayed in the news, TV, and movies. Often you will see how a bank robber will get away with the cash and never get caught. In movies criminals seem to get away with their crimes if in some way the crime is justified. We will write a custom essay sample on Crime and Best Glorification or any similar topic only for you Order Now In today’s world it sometimes appears to be easier if you’re the bad guy. This mind set is due to the portrayal of the criminal in movies and on the news. A prime example of glorifying a criminal would be CSI. CIS is a television show that is based on crime scenes and criminal minds. CSI goes into a criminals mind and show how and why I crime happens. This makes the criminal mind seem fascinating and sometimes portrays the criminal as a genius. I feel almost making the crime and criminal as famous and as powerful as the show it’s self. Another example would be Law Abiding Citizen. The main character goes on a killing spire on the justice center of Philadelphia. Even though he has killed so many people you still feel sympathetic towards him because his family was brutally raped and murdered and the justice center did nothing. Due to the circumstances he decided to take actions in to his own hands. This movie, in many ways, makes the crimes and the criminal more glorious as if he had done the right thing. The news is another example of glorifying crime and criminals. The news often talks about how cops can not control gangs, how the gangs are growing and becoming more powerful. This makes the gangs more glorious and, in ways, only adds power to the gang. For young children growing up in gang-ran areas this may push them to join because of the media’s portrayal of the power associated with gangs. The best glorification of crime and criminals seems to be portrayed in the news, TV, and movies. The media truly seems to make it look easier to be the bad guy. In today’s news and movies the criminals seems to be powerful or justified. How to cite Crime and Best Glorification, Papers

The Four Seasons restaurant caters to the unique needs of their Asian customers by providing highly personal services. They also have Asian cuisine for the purpose of satisfying the palates of these consumers. In contrast, western customers are not bothered if the services that are offered to them are impersonal; they are more satisfied when these services are delivered i n time, and with efficiency. Culturally, Americans have been socialized to be self reliant; they are self centered people that value individuality. Service delivery at the Four Seasons is able to accommodate the expectations of these customers and others. The needs of these customers and others are attended to on time. European customers, especially those from East Europe do not expect quality customer care services in any situation but they are normally very appreciative of services when available. This is because ordinarily, they have to be aggressive in order not to be overlooked in the course of trying to procure a service; and visitors to this region also notice the lack of warmth in customer care. This is a manifestation of the local culture. However, at Four Seasons; the quality of services offered is not compromised for guests of this origin. They are accorded the same quality treatment as the guests of any other origin. Latin American customers of hospitality products on th e other hand expect to get value for their money especially while in high end restaurants such as The Four Seasons. They also value warmth and friendliness from the staff of the hospitality institutions within which they are paying for services. The four services hotel ensures that their needs are met by providing services that are of even a higher quality than what customers expect. As far as customers of Arabian and Middle East descent are concerned, their expectations of a hospitality institutions are based on their religion; Islam.
